Mayor's Message: January 27/2011

Another year ends, and a new one begins. 2011 has been generally a good year, oh we have had some hic-cups, but for the most part things went smoothly.
Capital Project(s) Update
Construction on the new water treatment plant is progressing nicely. At this point in time, the contractors are still anticipating the new plant to be commissioned in late September. The water main tie-in project originally scheduled for early December was postponed by the contractor until late February. Once confirmed, notification of the new construction date will be placed on the community sign.
2012 Budgets
Council has deliberated the 2012 operating budget and it is expected to be approved by council at the next regular meeting. We will be reviewing the capital budget next.
Motions brought forward
I have proposed some changes to be brought to the Provincial Legislature through the Mayors and Reeves of Southern Alberta. First brought to my attention by Councillor Norris who felt with today’s technology that long distance charges imposed by TELUS are no longer warranted, I presented this issue at the October Mayor & Reeves meeting. There has been no positive response from Edmonton yet, but most Mayors and Reeves agree it is worth pursuing. I’ll keep you informed on this issue.
I also presented a proposal that would allow Alberta seniors to defer property taxes until the property was sold. This would be funded by the province as a loan, with a minimum interest rate (1%). Since property values generally increase over time, the value of the property would offset any taxes due at the time of sale. This deferral option would give seniors who own their home the use of the funds annually.
Christmas Light Display Contest
We hope you enjoyed the new Christmas lights displayed by the Town. To help celebrate the new lights, the Town sponsored a Christmas light contest this holiday season with a residential and commercial category.
We are happy to announce the following winners:
Residential: John & Marie Cromartie
Commercial: Vauxhall Bottle Depot
Both winners will be receiving a $50.00 credit against their January utility bill:
My wish for 2012 is that we all have a healthy and prosperous year. Respectfully yours,
